THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

If we practice seeing with the eyes of Jesus, we will always be able be able to recognize those who need our help.

-Pope Francis

WINTER HEATING ASSISTANCE GRANTS

Through the generosity of a generous benefactor of our tri-parish community there are restricted funds available for parishioners experiencing financial difficulties heating their homes during this cold winter season.  In order to be considered for a grant applicants need to be registered and attending members of one of the three parishes.  If there are children in the household they should be attending religious education classes. Only confidential letters addressed to Father Ed at the rectory will be accepted and reviewed. Please   provide contact information in the letter.  Funds will be awarded on the basis of need and sent directly to National Grid or heating oil company. Do not call the rectory and leave messages.  There already is a heavy volume of calls that come into the rectory daily from the three parishes and beyond.

2018 TAX LETTERS

We are currently preparing the end of the year letters for those registered parishioners of Saint Anthony, Church of the Presentation and Saint Edward Churches who use the envelope system (and On Line Giving) to make contributions to the parish. Please note the totals do not include: donations made to Saint Anthony Kitchen Ministries, Saint Edward Food and Wellness Center, Marys Meals or the Holy Family Home (those letters are mailed throughout the year), donations to the Bazaar, purchases of raffle tickets and donations to other parish fundraising events. The totals include all 2018 envelope offerings and On Line contributions received in the parish office by January 11, 2019. Any offering received after that date will be applied towards your offerings in 2019. As required, all letters will be mailed by January 31st. Please note the accuracy of the amounts stated in the letters is determined by the information which was completed on the front of each budget envelope. If you use the envelope sys-tem or On Line Giving and you do not receive a letter, please call the parish office.

CLOTHING DONATIONS FOR THE POOR

Many parishioners have been generous in the response to the need for winter coats.  Please note that the clothing depot at Saint Edward Food & Wellness Center is currently filled, and donations cannot be accepted unless cleared by Lori Porcaro or Father Ed.  Unsolicited bags of clothes randomly dropped off at the Food Center or Parish Office will be given to Goodwill Industries or discarded.  Recently someone attempted to drop off clothing at Holy Family Home that contained used men’s underwear. No clothing donations can be accepted there as the needs of the residents are met through Saint Edward Food & wellness Center.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Holy Family Home for Mothers and Children recently was awarded a $5000 grant from funds raised through the 2018 Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic.  It was presented to Father Ed and Ernie Spaziano, Director of Holy Family Home. Other nonprofits also benefited from the singer’s generosity at the event which took place at the Met School, Providence. Special thanks to Greg Mercurio who facilitated this gift through his association with Mr. Osborne.

RESPECT FOR LIFE COMMITTEE

Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out in the field.”  When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.  Then the LORD asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”  He answered, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

—Genesis 4:8-9

Father, help us to embrace the fact that we are our “brother’s keeper.” When, due to selfish motives, we try to cast off this responsibility, please call to us to account. We would be pleasing to you and to our “brother.”

ADVOCACY FOR THE UNBORN

Thanks to all who signed the petition circulated by Citizens For Life, Liberty &The Pursuit of Happiness against bills H5126 and H5127 which would legally allow third trimester abortions up to the point of birth.  The RI Right to Life is in need of crucial support and additional resources against a very well organized and well-financed pro-abortion lobby.  Anyone wishing to    volunteer can contact Barth Bracey at RIRTL by phone (401) 521-1862 or by email at bebracy@rirtl.org if you can provide assistance with time, talent or treasure. FATHER PAT MARTIN RETIRING FROM PARISH MISSIONS

Father Pat Martin will no longer be traveling to conduct parish missions due to health restrictions.  For many years he came to Rhode Island during the time of Saint Anthony Feast which he enjoyed.  He will be missed.  Before Christmas he had sent a note expressing gratitude for the support he received in the past and assured his prayers for the future.  While he is now in an assisted living facility in San Antonio, Texas, he is able to assist celebrating Mass for the residents and will never be idle.  Cards may be sent to the home of his sister to Father Patrick A Martin, 11510 Windtree, San Antonio, TX 78253.  Please keep him in your prayers.

ON LINE GIVING REMINDER

For all families who are currently using the online giving program we ask that you log into your account and update any information that has changed since you setup your initial account. This is also a good time to check your statements to see that your offering is being processed as you originally set it up. We have received notification of expired credit cards and invalid email addresses. Also, you should only set up your account once and have your offering deducted from that account; there are a few users who set up a new account each time they make an offering. If you have not signed up for online giving, please consider doing so. Log onto the parish website, stanthonychurch.org, click on the online giving icon, choose the church you are registered at and follow the menu driven screen. The help desk for all online questions is  1-800-348-2886 ext 4.
